Dr. Lawrence Tritle Professor of History Loyola Marymount University |

Since 1978, Dr. Tritle has taught history at Loyola Marymount University, where he has held the Chilton Chair in the Humanities and served as head of his department and chair of several university committees. Trained in the field of ancient history, Tritle has published widely on the subject of classical Greece, including most recently From Melos to My Lai: War and Survival (2000) and The Peloponnesian War (2004). He has served in such professional organizations as the American Philological Association and the Friends of Ancient History. Tritle, a historian and combat veteran of the Vietnam War, conducts research in the fields of ancient Greek history and comparative war and violence. He examines the experience of war from a human perspective, investigating not only the effects of war on the individuals who fought but also the wider impact of violence on culture and society. Tritle received his doctoral degree from the University of Chicago. He has also taught at Loyola University Chicago and at UCLA as a visiting professor of history Ethics and Economics: Ancient and Modern Syllabus
