The Henry R. Kravis professor of leadership and organization psychology at
Claremont McKenna College, Dr. Riggio serves as the director of the Kravis
Leadership Institute. He also works as a professor in the psychology department.
Much of Riggio’s career has been focused on the integration of leadership
studies with communication and psychology. In a 2003 publication in Group
Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice, Riggio wrote about the role of social
and emotional communication skills in leader emergence and effectiveness.
Additionally, Riggio has taught classes based on this integration of leadership
and communication.
Research interests include the effect of individual differences in communication
skills on leader emergence and effectiveness, communication processes in
organizational settings, and learning strategies in higher education. He is
particularly interested in the development of innovative techniques for
improving classroom learning, and methods for student outcome assessment.
Riggio has a doctorate in social/personality psychology and a master’s degree in
psychology from the University of California, Riverside. He earned his
bachelor’s degree in psychology at Santa Clara University.
