Ruscio has maintained a keen interest in
liberal education throughout his career. In an early publication "The Distinctive Scholarship
of the Selective Liberal Arts Colleges" he argued that the setting of a
liberal arts college encouraged a distinctive approach to
scholarship. He has also written on the culture of academic
disciplines and on the challenges of interdisciplinary work. He is a
member of the American Council of Learned Societies task force on
the future of liberal arts colleges. Dean of the Jepson School of
Leadership Studies from 2002-2006, Ruscio's leadership while in that
role led to the development of the Initiative on Leadership and the
Liberal Arts.
A political scientist, Ruscio researches democratic
theory and public policy. His writings focus on trust in political
leaders and institutions, civic engagement, social capital and
democratic theory. He is writing the Forward in the volume of
essays, Educating Future Leaders for the Modern World. Ruscio completed his master’s and doctoral degrees at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University. He taught politics at Washington and Lee University, his undergraduate alma mater, until 2002. Link: President, Washington & Lee University
