Leadership issues pervade science. Leaders of scientific organizations, for example, must possess certain skills if they are to navigate successfully in the turbulent, constantly changing, rapid-growth environment characteristic of most scientific organizations today. They must adapt their leadership styles to meet new challenges associated with the emergence of empowered "knowledge workers". And finally, they must confront issues of ethics and social responsibility that permeate scientific and medical organizations. Because students will become future consumers of scientific products and knowledge, they must understand these critical issues, particularly if they plan to embark on careers in the practice and management of science.
