The 2007 Workshop Report
"Leadership across the Liberal Arts Curriculum"
Seventy-four
individuals from 47 liberal arts colleges and universities
attended the workshop that
was held in Claremont, California, and was hosted by The Kravis
Leadership Institute at Claremont McKenna College.
Dr. Thomas Cronin, professor of
political science at
Colorado College, and president emeritus at Whitman
College gave the kick-off keynote address. Dr. Cronin
set the tone
for the workshop by touching upon the many facets of
leadership and the challenges that face even the most
thoughtful, liberally-educated leaders in today’s world.
Faculty who had developed and taught interdisciplinary,
team-taught courses through a grant from the W.M. Keck
Foundation shared experiences about how they integrate
leadership studies into a wide range of disciplines.
Student research presentations were a highlight of the
workshop's first day. On day two, Dr. Maria Klawe, president
of Harvey Mudd College, Dr. Michael Nelson, Fulmer Professor
of Political Science at Rhodes College, and Prof.
Cronin joined in a panel discussion on leadership and the
liberal arts. There were additional faculty course
presentations, discussion about future conversations among
workshop attendees, and a discussion of scholarly essays
that consider how to educate leaders for the modern world.
